On Sunday November 26, 2017, the annual youth convention of the missionary church association in Jamaica (MCA) was held at the Kendal Camp and Conference Center under the theme “Dem Yah Yutes Love God”. The young people of the MCA came out in their numbers from Negril point to Morant point to represent their respective churches and worship God in a Youthful manner.
The days’ speaker was Reverend Dr. Stevenson Samuel who used St John 21:15-17 to challenge the young people to love God in their fledging youthful years, love God in your frailty, love God in your failures and love God in the midst of friends, food and field. He further challenged the young people that if they are answering yes to loving God they have to go on a journey with God so that the plan and purpose He has for their lives can come to pass.
He delivered the word in a way that captured the attention and the hearts of the young which was made evident by the magnitude of young people who flocked to the altar in response to the word. The word was very sound and undiluted. (If you weren’t there you missed something.)
The evening session was a highlight of the talents within the MCA as the young people from different areas used their gifts to minister through, song and lip sync. After their ministry the guest artiste for the day, Minister Jermaine Edwards took the stage. He was well received by the young people who ran to the stage jumping and waving their hands as they sang along with him.
I decided to ask some of the young people present to express in their own words “What it means to love God? To which the following replies were given:
Salih: God is love and in order to love Him we must follow
His words written in the Bible and demonstrate Christian
values to persons in and out of the church.
Monique: To give Him your all not half but all.
Do things he said in His words, serving Him and also loving others.
Jason: To love God means to appreciate Him and believe in Him and know that everything He does is for a reason and to never doubt Him.
Meisha-Marie: To truly accept that He loves you unconditionally
and then totally give of all your being (mind, soul and body) over to Him for Him
to have total control. Loving God is trusting God in every circumstance.
Shamoy: To love God is to put Him above self and above all else.
To adore and to recognize His existence in ones life every single day.
Destiny: To be able to in ever-increasing measure come to know
and experience God’s love for myself, then from that personal understanding,
learn to submit my plans, desires, fears and opinions to Him.
Romar: When I look on God’s promises for my life and see them come to fruition that causes me to give my entire being fully to him.
Brittney: To love God means to appreciate Him and believe in Him and know that everything he does is for a reason and to never doubt Him.
Devin: To serve Him whole-heartedly utilizing the gifts
and talents He Himself blessed you with.
Tashay: He’s the only person who loves unconditionally
(no one loves us the way the Lord loves us).
Even when we fail Him time and time again He still loves us.
So we should love God the way he loves us.
Monique Doyle of the Calvary Missionary Church (St Thomas) responded: It means to really surrender yourself to Him and give Him your all knowing that no matter the circumstances you face, He will always be there for you.
As our young people seek to love God and live lives pleasing to Him let us remember them in prayer. Please pray especially for those who gave their lives to the Lord at Youth Convention 2017.
Congratulations to the NMYM team for a successful Youth Convention 2017, your labour was not in vain. To God be the Glory!
Many thanks to all who participated in the vox pop by giving responses. Special thanks to Jonathan Simpson, Zaneta Scott, Ben Coleman, Dominique Walters and Amir Woolery who helped in gathering the responses and capturing the photos
