Lately God has been speaking to my heart with scripture. The scriptures were Be sober and vigilant 1 Peter 5:8 and For God has not given you a spirit of fear but of power love and a sound mind 2 Timothy 1:7. Some of you may have seen me post the scripture on Facebook or Instagram. For the sake of context, here’s what’s happening where I live. Fake taxis are being used to take women away and either rape and kill them or rob and kill them. I believe the Lord wanted me to get rid of the fear and be sober and vigilant.
With all that has been happening in Jamaica lately, increased murder rate, abductions, rapes, robberies, human trafficking, state of emergency, it is easy for us to become fearful. I’ve seen (on twitter) and heard quite a few people say they don’t want to leave their homes or expressed fear of doing so. I must admit I too WAS a bit fearful and I didn’t want to hear about these things.
I realized that ignorance never benefitted anyone and I decided to be in the know. (Hosea 4:6a) My people perish because of lack of knowledge) I started reusing my twitter account this year as I found that twitter was far more informative than any other social media. Case in point:
1. A lot of people started sharing their experiences through twitter, letting people know what’s going and where.
2. The threat of Tsunami was posted on twitter by the Prime Minister and other journalist as well as the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM).
NB. Twitter is not the only place to get information, the news is designed for this. The issue is that, everything is not reported and therefore isn’t on the news.
All the “bad news” can cause you to become fearful but it’s wise to stay informed for your own safety. When fear is driving us we can be a bit silly. However, in this time we need to be sober (level-headed, sensible) and vigilant (keeping careful watch for possible danger or difficulties) in order to make calculated decisions. Be alert and conscious of your surroundings so that you can see if there is anything strange/out the ordinary.
I can honestly say I don’t have the remedy for the crime issue faced by our nation. I can only tell you to be safe, follow your gut feeling and listen to God. Get some information from security personnel, “what to do when I’m being followed” for example. My message through this post is simply: Be Sober and vigilant.
